Our Grass

Cow Grass Carpet Grass

Cow grass is the most common carpet-grass in Malaysia. Cow grass features broad blades of short to medium length. Despite its coarse appearance, cow grass is generally soft to the touch. With firmly entrenched roots, cow grass is the preferred choice for most school fields in Malaysia due to its affordability, especially for larger areas.

Philippines Carpet Grass

Ranked as the second-best carpet grass for lawns and gardens, Philippines Carpet Grass is celebrated for its resilience, making it easy to cultivate. Once the grass is stabilised, daily watering is not necessary. However, Philippines Carpet Grass thrives best in areas that are exposed to direct sunlight; if the planting site lacks sunlight, then this may not be the most suitable option.

Pearl Carpet Grass

Following the adage, “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” the round-shaped leaves or blades of Pearl Carpet Grass, resembling pearls, distinguish it from other carpet grass varieties. The perceived beauty of its “pearly” blades has led to its widespread cultivation in residential areas, becoming a popular choice for landscaping. If you’re seeking a grass variety that deviates from the norm, Pearl Carpet Grass might be a distinctive option.

Japanese Carpet Grass

Japanese Carpet Grass is the favourite carpet grass varieties in Malaysian. Japanese Carpet Grass stands out as it features finer, thinner blades compared to Philippines Carpet Grass. It is shorter, compact, and has remarkably softer blades. However, it’s premium look and the allure of its soft foliage has persuaded many Malaysians to make it their preferred carpet grass for their green space at home and other open spaces, despite its higher price.

Carpet grass (thrives best in tropical and subtropical regions. It is well-suited to areas with warm temperatures, high humidity, and a tropical climate. Here are some factors that contribute to the optimal growth of carpet grass:

  • Climate: Carpet grass is adapted to warm-season climates. It grows best in regions with high temperatures and ample sunlight.
  • Temperature Range: It flourishes in temperatures ranging from 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 32 degrees Celsius). In cooler climates, carpet grass may not perform as well.
  • Humidity: Carpet grass prefers high humidity levels, making it well-suited for tropical environments where moisture is abundant.
  • Sunlight: While it can tolerate some shade, carpet grass generally thrives in areas with full sunlight. It may not perform as well in heavily shaded locations.
  • Soil Type: It is adaptable to a variety of soil types, including sandy and loamy soils. Well-drained soil is beneficial for optimal growth.
  • Watering: Carpet grass requires regular watering, and it does well in areas where a consistent water supply is available. However, it can withstand occasional periods of drought.
  • Maintenance: Carpet grass is known for its relatively low maintenance requirements, making it suitable for areas where intensive lawn care may not be practical.

Given these preferences, carpet grass is commonly found in Southeast Asia, including countries like Malaysia, the Philippines, and other tropical regions. It’s essential to consider these environmental factors when deciding whether carpet grass is a suitable choice for a specific location and climate.

Here are the advantages of using carpet grass in landscaping:

  • Soft Aesthetic Appeal: Carpet grass provides a soft and lush appearance, creating a visually appealing carpet-like green surface in landscapes.
  • Cost-Effective: It is often more affordable than some other grass varieties, making it a cost-effective choice for landscaping projects, especially in larger areas.
  • Low Maintenance: Carpet grass requires minimal maintenance, reducing the need for frequent mowing and intensive care, which can be beneficial for homeowners and landscapers seeking simplicity.
  • Adaptability: It is adaptable to various soil types, making it versatile for different landscaping environments. Carpet grass can thrive in different conditions, including sandy or loamy soils.
  • Quick Establishment: When propagated through sodding or stolons, carpet grass can quickly establish itself, providing a green cover and minimizing the time it takes for the landscape to look full and complete.
  • Drought Tolerance: Once established, carpet grass displays good drought tolerance, helping landscapes maintain their green appearance during periods of reduced water availability.
  • Moderate Shade Tolerance: While preferring full sunlight, carpet grass can tolerate partial shade, allowing for flexibility in landscaping design for areas with varied sun exposure.
  • Soil Erosion Control: The dense matting and root system of carpet grass make it effective for controlling soil erosion on slopes and embankments.
  • Versatility: Carpet grass is suitable for various landscaping applications, including residential lawns, parks, and commercial spaces, contributing to its widespread use.
  • Wildlife Habitat: The dense growth of carpet grass can serve as a habitat for small wildlife, fostering biodiversity in the landscaped area.

These advantages make carpet grass a popular choice for those looking for an aesthetically pleasing, low-maintenance, and adaptable grass variety for landscaping purposes.

Carpet grass is generally considered to have good resistance to many pests and diseases, making it a relatively low-maintenance option for lawns and landscapes. However, it’s essential to note that no grass is entirely immune, and factors such as environmental conditions and maintenance practices can influence its susceptibility. Here are some key points regarding carpet grass and its resistance to pests and diseases:

Pests:

  • Tolerance: Carpet grass is often tolerant of various pests common to lawns, such as chinch bugs, armyworms, and spittlebugs.
  • Low Pest Attraction: It tends to be less attractive to certain insects compared to other grass varieties, reducing the risk of infestations.

Diseases:

  • Resilience: Carpet grass is known for its resilience to many common lawn diseases, including fungal issues.
  • Favourable Conditions: While generally disease-resistant, factors like poor soil drainage and excessive moisture can create conditions conducive to fungal diseases.

Tips for Pest and Disease Management of Carpet Grass:

  • Regular Maintenance: Maintain a regular lawn care routine, including proper watering, mowing, and fertilization, to promote overall grass health and resilience.
  • Observation: Periodically inspect the carpet grass for any signs of pests or diseases, such as discoloration, thinning, or unusual patches.
  • Cultural Practices: Implement cultural practices like aerating the soil, promoting good drainage, and avoiding overwatering to create an environment less favourable for pests and diseases.
  • Timely Treatment: If pest or disease issues are identified, consider timely and targeted treatment using suitable pesticides or fungicides. Consult with local experts for advice on appropriate products.

While carpet grass is generally resistant to most regular pests and disesases, it’s advisable to tailor your care approach to local conditions and be vigilant in monitoring the lawn for any potential issues. Regular observation and proactive measures can contribute to the health and vitality of carpet grass in landscaping.

Carpet grass is characterized by a relatively slow growth rate compared to some other grass species. The speed of its growth is influenced by factors such as temperature, sunlight, watering, soil conditions, maintenance practices, and the method of establishment. While it may take some time to establish itself, carpet grass’s steady growth contributes to the development of a dense and resilient lawn over time. Regular care and attention to environmental factors are crucial for promoting its optimal growth.

Carpet grass demonstrates a moderate tolerance to partial shade, making it a viable option for areas with limited sunlight. While it generally thrives in full sunlight, it can adapt to conditions where shade is present for part of the day. Here are key considerations for using carpet grass in shaded areas:

  • Partial Shade Adaptability: Carpet grass can flourish in locations with filtered sunlight or where shade occurs intermittently, making it suitable for landscapes with some tree cover.
  • Sunlight Optimization: For optimal growth, it is preferable to choose areas with at least a few hours of direct sunlight. Although carpet grass can tolerate shade, providing ample sunlight enhances its performance.
  • Dense Shade Caution: Carpet grass may face challenges in areas with continuous and dense shade. In such instances, alternative grass varieties or shade-tolerant ground covers might be more appropriate.
  • Soil Considerations: Ensure that the soil in shaded regions promotes good drainage, as excessive moisture and poor drainage can negatively impact the health of carpet grass.
  • Monitoring and Adaptation: Regularly observe the carpet grass in shaded areas for any signs of thinning or stress. Adjust care practices accordingly or explore alternative landscaping options if the grass appears less vigorous than in sunnier locations.

In conclusion, while carpet grass can endure partial shade, providing adequate sunlight is crucial for its optimal growth.

Carpet grass is generally not recommended for high-traffic areas due to its characteristics. Although it offers advantages like low maintenance and adaptability, it may not withstand continuous foot traffic as well as more robust grass varieties. Here are some reasons why carpet grass may not be the optimal choice for areas with heavy use:

  • Limited Toughness: Carpet grass has a relatively delicate texture compared to some other grass types, making it less resilient to constant foot traffic.
  • Thinning and Wear: Frequent trampling in high-traffic zones can lead to thinning of the carpet grass and wear on the turf, resulting in a less attractive appearance and diminished overall turf quality.
  • Slow Recovery: Carpet grass has a slower growth rate compared to certain other grasses. Consequently, it may take a longer time to recover from damage caused by intense use.
  • Limited Traffic Tolerance: While it can endure light foot traffic, such as occasional walking, it may struggle to thrive in areas subjected to continuous or intense activity.

For locations with high foot traffic – we’d recommend cow grass as it’s a cheaper option that’s generally used on roadsides and fields and it’s cheaper to upkeep and replace damaged sections.
